The National Energy Skills Center (NESC)

The National Energy Skills Center (NESC) was established in 1997 with its primary objective being the building of the human resource capital of Trinidad and Tobago. It was envisaged then, as the solution to the need for a premier training provider to lead national training initiatives. This vision was based on the projected demands for certified craftsmen, arising out of the growth in the energy sector and consequently, the construction and related industries.

The NESC was established to be an autonomous training provider; linking State, Industry and International Institutions and has to date trained over twelve thousand (20,000) craftsmen and over 120,000 persons in Information and Communications Technology. The NESC had its genesis in a Trust Deed between the Government of Trinidad and Tobago and the Atlantic LNG Company Limited and was created to address the immediate and pressing demand for skilled personnel to work on the Atlantic LNG, Train 1 project. With the assistance of Dr. Tarry Slusher, a consultant from Bechtel (the contractor responsible for the construction ALNG Train I) the NESC developed curricula for its Welding (up to 6G code) and Pipefitting & Fabrication training programmes. This enabled the NESC to commence training at the former Trintoc Trade School in Mahaica Point Fortin.

The NESC owns and manages eleven (11) Campuses located across Trinidad and Tobago. These Campuses are located at: Debe, La Brea, Laventille, Mayaro, Moruga, Palo Seco, Point Fortin, Point Lisas, Ste. Madeleine, Tobago and Woodford Lodge Chaguanas. The NESC also established in December of 2013, the first Open-Access Drilling Academy in the Caribbean and Latin America.

The organisation conducts well over 15 nine-month in skills for various sectors as well as four (4) four-year apprenticeship programmes in Heavy Equipment Technician, Automotive Services Technician, Instrumentation and Industrial Maintenance (Millwright).

With the signing of an Agreement with Microsoft Caribbean Limited in 2012, the NESC has attained the distinction of becoming a Microsoft IT Academy. The Company now offers the Microsoft Office Specialist and the Information Technology Specialist Programmes. The NESC continues as well to provide training in Computer Literacy at the community level.
